Frequently Asked Questions
Do You Know the Difference Between Medical-Grade Skincare and High Street Over-The-Counter Skin Care?
It seems these days that every brand claims to be the ‘Holy Grail’ when it comes to skincare. Each one makes bold claims that offer you the best results. But are their claims really true or even valid? Are you, like countless other people, being subtly persuaded to trust them more than they deserve by extortionately paid celebrity endorsements, sumptuous glossy ads, sleek packaging and highly perfumed products?
It's time to set the record straight when it comes to over the counter VS. medical grade skincare and to provide you with some important information about the products you choose to put on your skin.
- The quality & quantity of ingredients matters: medical grade products contain more active ingredients such as retinol, AHAs (alpha-hydroxy-acid), BHAs(beta-hydroxy-acid), antioxidants and peptides. Although you may see these ingredients on your over-the-counter products, they are usually diluted and manufactured to suit light, generalised concerns. The concentrations used within medical grade skincare are usually much greater and the quality of the ingredients is also generally superior.
For example (here’s a little real science): Vitamin A is one of the most popular active ingredients currently used in skincare regimes. Many products claim to contain vitamin A (which is frequently identified on the label as retinol). But vitamin A exists in several different forms and our bodies are only able to actively use the form known as Retinoic Acid. All other forms need to be converted to this in order to become usable to us. Retinyl Palmitate is commonly listed as an ingredient in many over the counter skincare brands to tick the vitamin A box, but requires three further steps to be converted into the Retinoic Acid our bodies can actually use. So we are actually losing an increasing percentage of the original ingredient as our internal biological processes make each necessary conversion step. Therefore, a large amount of Retinyl Palmitate needs to be delivered to a cell to produce clinically meaningful effects. This is what medical grade skincare products do while others do not.
Medical grade skincare brands have far higher standards than over-the-counter brands and AlumierMD’s scientists have over 100 years combined experience in achieving this. It is significant that Dr Karl Lintner, part of Alumier’s scientific team, introduced the concept of peptides, globally, for use in cosmetic applications and has won numerous awards for the development of other innovative active cosmetic ingredients.
- How essential ingredients need to be delivered into the skin:
The packaging and advertisements of many skincare brands are likely to state that their products contain a whole array of the best ingredients available. This may be true. But if the method of delivery of these ingredients is not sufficiently effective then, quite simply, the product will not be able to penetrate the skin to fulfil its role. With medical grade skincare products you can be assured that their formulations are designed with advanced technology and delivery methods in mind, to ensure that the active ingredients penetrate your skin to the correct depth to exert their effect.
What Skin Types Are Suitable for Medical Grade Skincare?
AlumierMD’s medical grade skincare caters for all skin types and for all skincare concerns. Whether you have skin which is dry, ageing, oily, prone to acne or rosacea, pigmented or simply sensitive, there is a full range of products that can be tailored to suit your specific requirements. Your practitioner will work closely with you to ensure you are counselled each step of the way towards achieving beautiful skin.
What Happens During My Consultation?
When it comes to medical grade skincare, it is important to have a thorough consultation, during which the behaviour of your skin and your current skin care routine will be discussed. No two people's skin is the same, so the consultations we offer are an opportunity to inform and advise you on which products may be beneficial to your skin, and how they will work to give you your best skin ever. We will also need to know about your medical history, any medications you have recently taken or are currently taking, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have any allergies it is essential we know this as well.
What Should I Do Before My Appointment?
It is helpful to arrive at your appointment without makeup so that we can fully assess your skin in its current natural condition. This will help us to suggest the right products for you going forward.
Are Results Immediate?
Due to the natural cycle of skin cell formation and regeneration, maximum results will not be immediate. But within days you will start to notice a change in the condition of your skin. The cycle of a skin cell, from its creation to the point at which it falls away as dust, is generally around one month. As we age, this process takes longer - sometimes twice as long - so, with this in mind, it is no wonder that we often start to feel our skin looks tired and dull. AlumierMD skin care products are created to work together with each other, whatever your skin condition. Many of the products are designed to speed up the cellular regeneration of the skin, leaving it looking and feeling more youthful and radiant. The full effects of using AlumierMD products will be visible in around three months.
