Frequently Asked Questions
What does PRF treatment involve?
PRF treatment involves taking a small sample of your blood from which we extract platelets. The sample is placed in a centrifuge (a rotating machine) on a low-speed spin cycle, which separates out red blood cells and platelet-rich fibrin. The platelet-rich fibrin is injected into the area of concern, naturally triggering your cells to repair and regenerate.
Is PRF safe?
PRF is a great natural alternative to injecting synthetic substances or it can be used in conjunction with injectables. At Serenity, we believe in a natural and holistic approach. Typically, PRF treatment is very safe due to the nature of the naturally occurring injectable (plasma and fibrin). Like any injectable, there is a risk of bruising, swelling, and pain at the site of the injection. However, this should go down within a few days following treatment.
What does PRF contain?
Unlike fillers and Botox injections, PRF treatment is 100% natural and organic. PRF contains substances naturally found in your body, your own blood, and fibrin, a protein matrix. Once these natural substances have been harvested, a gel is formed which is made up of a high concentration of white blood cells, stem cells (for growth) and fibrin, which is injected back into your skin for facial rejuvenation.
What is Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)?
PRF injections (made from plasma and fibrin) stimulate healing at a cellular level. Platelets are rich in growth factors and remain active during the process. The Fibrin acts a mesh for the collagen and hyaluronic acid. PRF can be used for rejuvenation, thinning hair, the improvement of scarring and under eye hollowing.
Does PRF treatment hurt?
A very mild stingy sensation may be felt when the injections are made. Injections are made with very fine needles or a cannula to minimise the pain and can be administered with a local anaesthetic. You can discuss any concerns you have with us for full support and guidance.
Are there any side effects?
There are a few side effects associated with PRF treatment you should consider.
These include:
- Mild bruising and swelling of the skin where injected
- Some tenderness of the skin
Please note that these side effects should go in a few days.
How long is the healing process?
Following the procedure, there is usually minimal to no downtime, so you can resume daily activities as normal. However, we do advise that you have no special events for 3 days after. The healing process is gradual with side effects (as described above) fading after a few days and the desirable results of the treatment appearing noticeable between 2 to 4 weeks.
How long does PRF treatment take to administer?
PRF treatment takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour to administer and is performed in a series of treatments spaced out, 4 weeks apart.
Can I expect results immediately?
The effects of PRF may be seen within a few days. However, you may need several treatments to see results. As your skin begins to produce more collagen you should begin to notice more significant results 4 to 6 weeks after your treatment. For long-term benefits, such as enhanced skin quality, we suggest repeating treatments every 6-12 months.
How long do the results of PRF treatment last?
Results typically last 6-12 months. However, please note that each patient is different. The treatment outcome is dependent on the quality of your own blood. We recommend living a healthy lifestyle in the lead up to your treatment and after. Maintain hydration levels and refrain from smoking.
